A Tribute to Michael Phelps' Golden Character

A Special Message to Students

In analyzing Michael Phelps’ rise to greatness, it all seems to boil down to two words—personal character.

When reviewing the course of Michael’s life-long swimming journey, many character traits come to mind. Determination, the ability to stay focused, perseverance, diligence, and a burning commitment to excellence are all traits that serve as appropriate words to describe Michael throughout his career. However, if given the task of choosing the three character traits that were most important in helping Michael achieve the seemingly impossible, they might be vision, resilience, and confidence.

First, from the time he was a young boy, Michael had a vision of becoming a gold medalist, and he never diverted from his dream. Even when he first began winning championships in his hometown and state, his focus remained on winning the most coveted prize—as one being distinguished at the top of his game. In short, Michael began his career with the end in mind– never losing sight of his ultimate goal, and ultimately, after many years of competing, his vision became reality.

Secondly, throughout his career, Michael Phelps was resilient. He had the ability to bounce back through the ups and downs of life that every individual must face. You can be certain that no human being could achieve what Michael has accomplished without experiencing periods of doubt, personal setbacks, and various other challenges. However, what sets a champion apart is the ability to get back up, shake off the dust, and continue with the task at hand.

Finally, Michael Phelps remained confident that—with focus, diligence, perseverance, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—he could become the greatest swimmer the world has ever seen. His confidence was rooted in a rock-solid belief that persistence and hard work pave the road to greatness.

As a student, do you have a vision of accomplishment for your life? Are you a resilient individual who can keep going after disappointment, failure, or personal setbacks? If you want to reach the goals you hold most precious, remember the example of Michael Phelps as you strive to achieve your dreams. After all, not so many years ago, he was a student—just like you— facing the same sort of day-to-day challenges you may be facing right now.
